A star defensive tackle at Georgia Tech, Roman Reigns wrecked offensive guards for both the Minnesota Vikings and the Jacksonville Jaguars before becoming a WWE Superstar. The hulking powerhouse brought his smash-mouth gridiron style to WWE’s developmental system, NXT, where he left a long line of tough opponents in crumpled heaps. But it was at the 2012 Survivor Series that Reigns made his greatest impact. In the heat of a Triple Threat Match between WWE Champion CM Punk, John Cena and Ryback, Reigns hit the ring alongside fellow WWE NXT competitors Dean Ambrose and Seth ... Read More

WWE star Roman Reigns assembles the greatest football team in wrestling history.

One of the prevailing feelings in WWE Superstar Roman Reigns’ life this month is anticipation – anticipation not just of this Sunday’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, but also of the kickoff of college football season.

Before he was a Superman-punching contender for WWE gold, Reigns was an All-ACC defensive lineman at Georgia Tech by the name of Joe Anoai.

And though Reigns’ field of competition has changed, he does draw football experience in the ring. “My finisher, the spear, it’s pretty much an open-field tackle, driving my shoulder into the guy’s chest and wrapping up,” he said. “It was an obvious choice.”

Reigns will spend the weekend in Los Angeles sitting on a “SummerSlam Confidential” panel with Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Hulk Hogan, Sting, Cesaro and Sheamus and then facing the villainous Randy Orton on Sunday in the ring.

But before that, Reigns took time to play football general manager and draft his own fantasy team from WWE’s roster. Presenting Team Reigns:

OFFENSE

LT – Big Show. “We’d have to put him on the island and protect the blind side.”

RT – Tensai. “He’s a big, tall, real wide guy. Very athletic.”

G – Mark Henry and Bray Wyatt. “Mark Henry is a guard. Definitely a strong guard for sure. Bray’s got a low center of gravity and has good feet on him. He knows what to do.”

C – John Cena. Cena, the undisputed WWE champion, was a Division III All-America at the position for Springfield (Mass.) College. “He doesn’t have enough fat on him, but the center gets a lot of help from the guard, so we’ll keep Cena at center since he knows the position.”

TE – Wade Barrett. Reigns’ first instinct was to put Jack Swagger at this spot, assured that Swagger would be an excellent blocker. “But he looks like he has brick hands,” Reigns said. “Wade’s got that tight end frame, a little long and lanky. He looks like a guy who could run down the seam.”

RB – Dolph Ziggler. “I’m trying to think of speed here, so we’ll put Dolph in there.”

FB – Ryback. “He’d have a big neckroll. He’d wear a huge neck roll. He’d be the best. We’d have him mic’d up, and he’d be saying all kinds of big guy phrases. (Reigns breaks into a cave man voice.) Like, ‘Big guy block. Big guy block!’”

WR – Kofi Kingston and Fandango. “Kofi, he’d be like a slot guy. Fandango has the footwork down; we have to make sure he has the hands.”

QB – Cesaro. “He has the size, mobility and arm strength to make all the throws.”

WWE Superstar Roman Reigns is this week’s guest on Turnbuckle Weekly with Chuck Carroll

When you’re cousin is The Rock and you’re already one of the most popular wrestlers in the WWE, it’s natural to wonder whether Hollywood will soon come calling.

But in the case of Roman Reigns, it’s not. At least not for now.

“I’m willing to try anything and gain a little experience in anything,” he said. “Is it something that is a big goal of mine? I can’t say that it is right now because I’m so caught up in WWE. (I’m) trying to be the face of this company and the top guy and have the WWE World Championship.”

His determination to become the franchise player of the largest pro wrestling company in the world hasn’t wavered since he burst onto the scene in 2012 with the renegade group known as The Shield. Paired with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, the faction quickly gained popularity among fans with Reigns serving as the front man. Read the rest of this entry

The former Shield member talks to SB Nation before his SummerSlam match against Randy Orton.

On Sunday, Roman Reigns will take on Randy Orton at SummerSlam. It will be the first singles pay-per-view match for Reigns since the breakup of The Shield, one of the most dominant trios the WWE has ever seen.

“I’m ready to go. I’m tired of waiting,” says Reigns. “I feel good [about the match]. I wrestle five to six times a week and [the matches are] all by myself, so my engine’s ready to go. I’m running on pretty much full cylinders here. It’s just about getting out there and doing it now, but I couldn’t be any more ready than I am.”

He had to get some staples in his forehead a couple weeks ago. That came after a Last Man Standing match against Kane, but Reigns has proven his durability during his short time with the company. Heading into SummerSlam, Reigns says he’s at 100 percent. Read the rest of this entry

CraveOnline: Growing up within the business as a wrestling fan, was there any particular match that stands out as a favorite?

Roman Reigns: I’d have to say Steve [Austin] and Bret Hart, ya know when he got all bloody and passed out [Wrestlemania 13]. That one was pretty badass. That kind of sparked the whole Attitude era and shifted the fan favorites. I was really into [Ricky] Steamboat vs Macho at Wrestlemania 3. That was a revolutionary match as far as all of the false finishes. I think it had like 20 or 30 false finishes down the stretch. Even the Hogan slammed Giant match was memorable. Those were the things I remember.

CraveOnline:  You’re from the famous Anoa’i wrestling family. What were family get togethers like? Do you guys just talk wrestling all the time or is business just business and family time is just family time?

Roman Reigns: It’s a little bit of both. It just depends on who’s there. If I’m with my dad, yeah, he’s going to talk a good bit about the business. He just kind of mentors me and tells me what he’s thinking about my stuff. But growing up and all that, family barbecues, it was all family, man, ya know? You have to picture it. We always had so many kids in our family, running around the yard, sweaty little kids jumping in and out of the pool, the front door and back doors swinging open and shut, all of the parents getting pissed off telling us to stay outside. Always coolers and coolers of beers and soda and chicken being barbecued, burgers being barbecued, it was a good time. It brings me back, actually.

CraveOnline:  I’m a dad and you’re a dad. So I’m curious, how is life on the road when you have a little one?

Roman Reigns: That’s the toughest thing. That’s the absolute toughest part of my job is just not being there every single day. Back when my dad was on the road in the 80s it was different but fortunately, we have smart phones that can pretty much do anything under the sun. But at the same time, there’s nothing like being there holding your child, loving on your child, eating meals with them, that’s the toughest thing about not being home. What you have to do, is maximize your time, any time you can be a great father.
